Southern California’s warm, sandy shores are known for impeccable beach volleyball.
Earlier this summer, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) hosted its 2022 Manhattan Beach Open. First established in 1960, the event has become an iconic tribute to the sport. With the Manhattan Beach Open serving as a qualifying event for athletes to compete at the AVP Championships in Phoenix this month, the stakes couldn’t have been higher.
The venue included a larger-than-life beach volleyball stadium, three separate VIP areas, six feature courts, and even an overflow viewing jumbotron. Our team at A3 Visual worked closely with AVP event organizers to activate the sand ahead of the tournament.
Known as the “epicenter” of the beach volleyball world, the AVP Gold Series Manhattan Beach Open draws thousands of guests and sports enthusiasts to the court for a multi-day tournament packed with energy and athletic ability. The event is open to the public and is one of the most highly-anticipated attractions of the summer.
This year, the tournament welcomed back former event champions as well as decorated Olympic athletes. Ultimately, it was Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb who secured the men’s title with Sara Kughes and Kelly Kolinske capturing the women’s victory.
Following a range of custom graphics printed for last year’s events, we were eager to once again work with AVP for the organization’s 2022 Gold Series. We produced several custom mesh banners, as well as provided various hardware and installation services for the event.
Most banners were printed using ultraviolet technology and finished with grommets for easy fastening. Ranging anywhere from 240” all the way to 1150” wide, these graphics caught the eye of attendees and athletes alike. The “AVP” logo was prominently featured against high-contrast black fabric and was designed to mirror a gold gradient effect, playing up the “Gold Series” name. The majority of the banners were installed surrounding the grandstand and cabana platforms, as well as courtside boxes and other VIP areas. Additional graphics included double-sided Falcon flags, printed using direct dye sublimation and secured with durable ground spikes.
Our Los Angeles-based crews provided on-site installation and removal services to ensure an efficient setup and takedown process.
Following months of cancellations and delays, last year’s Manhattan Beach Open was welcomed back with open arms. The 2021 tournament was a huge success, and the 2022 festivities only continued the legacy of the decades-old beach volleyball tradition.
We value our partnership with the Association of Volleyball Professionals and look forward to the Gold Series events each and every August. Especially for recurring sporting and entertainment events, it can be incredibly beneficial for both parties to work with the same vendors year after year. This partnership allowed us to develop a deep understanding of the event, the venue, and the organization’s visual identity.
