Immersive Art Installation for Hueman “Homebody” Exhibit

Inspired by the days of being home alone with our thoughts and emotions, Bay Area artist Hueman has the art world buzzing with her “Homebody” installation.

“As society excitedly returns to normal, we reflect on our collective experience in isolation,” says Hueman’s website, “The past year and a half has affected the way we look at ourselves and each other; we have been existing together, apart.”

The installation invites visitors to look inward as “Homebody” explores the meaning of identity. “What happens when we are forced to stay at home and face ourselves?”

Here’s a closer look at our projection mapping work at Berkeley’s Ciel Creative Space.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: HUEMAN

Allison Torneros, known throughout the art industry as “Hueman,” is a multidisciplinary artist based in Oakland, California. Her unique style blends ethereal realism, something she has coined as “etherealism.” Characterized by bold colors and abstract interpretations, Hueman has made a name for herself through her unique expression of the human condition.

Spanning over 20,000 square feet and boasting 30 foot high ceilings, guests of the “Homebody” exhibit were invited to explore five cohesive installations at the Ceil Creative Space. “Homebody” was open to the public January 28th through February 20th, 2022.

ACTIVATING THE “HOMEBODY” EXHIBIT

Hueman’s “Homebody” activation leaned heavily on the senses. With immersive projection mapping technology combined with captivating audio and video capabilities, the sprawling creative space was immediately brought to life and gave guests a one-of-a-kind experience.

Our partners at Epson donated a series of 12,000 lumen projectors for the installation. Our team at A3 Visual carefully mapped each projector to its designated canvas and provided the necessary media servers to ensure a seamless visual experience.

Two of the five rooms were each supplied with Epson projectors as well as Modulo Pi Player 4 output servers. A third room included ten Epson 3,000 lumen projectors mapped to the paintings. Using the media servers, we were able to control lights inside each room to match the color palette of the streaming video content.

The entire exhibit was also automated to turn on or off based on certain times of day. Our team also created an iPad/iPhone interface that allowed the client to control the projectors on their own and without our direct supervision or involvement.

PROJECTION MAPPING ART INSTALLATIONS BY A3 VISUAL

We are always eager to collaborate with other artists and creatives, so when we had the opportunity to work together with Hueman, we jumped at the chance.

The “Homebody” exhibit has been an incredible success, and we couldn’t be happier with the final product. Over the past few weeks, thousands of guests experienced a truly one-of-a-kind art exhibit that beautifully combined both art and technology. This ever-growing industry is pioneering a new kind of art, one that engages the senses and brings new life to traditional mediums.
